A connection to place, a quiet observation of intimacy, often solitary, embedded in the Australian landscape. These particular works are within or adjacent National Parks along Gippsland rugged coastline over 2019.
Painting from life is an important aspect of Kate’s art practice, in particular “plein air” painting. Observational painting can provide the basis for experimentation in object, form, colour, composition and technique. This body of work is a direct response to a time and place, not intended to be a photo realistic representation, but an impression. They form the basis of works to come.
Kate Cross has previously had two solo exhibitions in The Residents Gallery, Montsalvat. Take Me To The River 2017: a reflection of the moods of the Yarra River and the surrounding landscape.
Kate Cross: Still Life Paintings 2019, a series of still life paintings produced within the grounds of Montsalvat in the Gatehouse Studio and Matcham Skippers Studio during an artists residency.
