This is Gwen’s second exhibition in the Boulevard @ Montsalvat. Continuing her exploration of the female form, Gwen has created a new series of limited edition reduction linocuts focusing on the quiet reposes of female reflection, sleep and the joy of being surrounded by nature.
Many of her prints in this exhibition are inspired by a floral patterned vintage dress that she picked up from the Camberwell market decades ago. This pattern is used boldly, intertwined with the figure and juxtaposed into a natural or imagined environment using a lively harmonious colour palette.
Using the complex traditional reductive printmaking technique, Gwen finds the surprise and serendipity of the process addictive. The fact that you have no opportunity to go back, modify or correct your prints, or add additional prints to the edition is challenging and motivating to Gwen.
Usually, each print consists of ten or more layers of colour printed from a single linoleum block. All her prints are produced by hand carving the linoleum block, then hand printing the block using an etching press in her home studio. Gwen prints on 100% archival cotton rag paper using high quality oil-based inks. All prints are signed and numbered as original limited edition prints.
Gwen is an artist-printmaker based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Since 2014, Gwen has focused on fine art printmaking and has held numerous solo exhibitions and won awards for her reduction linocut prints. Her work is held in many public and private collections around Australia and overseas.
