Artist Statement - Lisa May
“The title for this exhibition derives from the support the series of works is created on. I have been using wood board as a base for painting and drawing as it allows for a more robust application and experimentation with the media and techniques. The various layers have been drawn and painted on, etched into and partially sanded back and reworked. The board itself has become a compositional element in some of the pieces.
The figure works are based on women in sports and represent the power and dynamism of the female figure as an antithesis of the historical representation of women through art. The women in these works are active and strong as opposed to the male gaze representation of passive, unrobed female figures.
The works of the local fauna were influenced by a found flight feather which I crafted into a quill and dipped into ink or thinned oil paints to draw the species of bird the feather came from. A call out to the local community resulted in more found feathers being donated and the pieces grew and developed from there and indeed continue to do so.”
