Working with collaged Japanese papers, gouache washes and line, Julie Bradley plays with illusions of space and the formal elements of the image, to create multilayered works on paper.
Julie draws her inspiration from the lived experience of the land and also from the written word often referencing passages of poems, songs or stories in her artwork titles.
Words prompt clear images in her mind’s eye and she uses them in place of rough sketches as inspiration to begin her work.
Hers is a spiritual connection to land and through distilling her lived experience, Julie creates abstract evocations where memories and emotions are made visible.
While these works reference actual places that Julie has moved through and spent time in, the work remains abstracted and holds for her the essence of that landscape.
Each image could be interpreted as both vast open space and tiny microcosm. They exemplify the artist’s abiding love of composition and colour.
