EXHIBITION: Layered Perspectives | James Voller

Layered Perspectives

James Voller
The Barn Gallery
16th of June - 9th of July 2023

The exhibition can be viewed during Montsalvat opening hours:

Thursday - Sunday 10:00am - 4:00pm

‘Layered Perspectives’ is an immersive photographic installation that examines place, photography, and the meeting points of digital and technology. Combining images of the New Zealand landscape and Australian industrial buildings, 'Layered Perspectives' explores the impact of progress and industry on the environment. The piece layers images of the New Zealand landscape with internal photographic sculptures of Australian industrial buildings to create illusions of industry and its impact on the landscape.

This exhibition will mark 10 years of artist James Voller being in Australia, forcing him to examine where he once considered home and where that is for him now, by creating slippages between places to consider space and time, texture and social construction.

James Voller is a New Zealand born, Melbourne-based photographic artist.

Since moving to Melbourne in 2012, James has developed a practice that works with a range of different communities, both in galleries and public spaces. He has recently completed a Master of Fine Art by Research (High Distinction) through Monash University and also holds a coursework Master of Fine Arts from RMIT University and a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Canterbury.

James has been included in several group exhibitions, including Streets of Gold at the Museum of London in 2012. In 2010, he received the Ethel Susan Jones Travelling Scholarship from the University of Canterbury to undertake research in Europe and also completed the RMIT Krems Artist Residency in Austria. James’s practice is focused on creating large-scale public art works that examine place and architecture.
