The Eltham Art Show provides an exciting platform and welcomes Artists to present their works to be judged within 11 categories.
Supported strongly by the Nillumbik Shire Council and supporting Partners, the show encourages a strong relationship with the artists to present their best works and establish the show as one of the region’s leading art shows.
2023 has seen a new dimension for the show in its decision to exhibit all 3D works at Montsalvat. Montsalvat’s relationship with the early art development and rustic culture fits perfectly with this decision to display glass, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery.
Montsalvat played an important part in the early attraction of artists to Eltham. In 1934, artist and architect, Justus Jorgensen and his wife Lily bought the land between Metery Road and Hillcrest Avenue and spent their lives creating the now famous artists’ colony. The buildings were constructed from local stone, pise and mudbrick and built by the painting students, patrons and friends of Jorgensen.
Among the young artists to visit Montsalvat were George Chalmers, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, Clifton Pugh, Roy Opie, Mervyn Skipper, Matcham Skipper, Helen Skipper, Sonia Skipper, Lesley Sinclair, Betty Rowland, Alistair Knox, Arthur Munday, Helen Lempriere and Joe Hannan.
