EXHIBITION: MARKETA KEMP | WHAT LIES BENEATH

The Return - Monotype Print | Marketa Kemp

WHAT LIES BENEATH is a collection of monotypes, inspired by Australian landscape of the hidden kind.

“When I look around, I become immersed in my surroundings, become part of the landscape itself. I tried to capture the way the place makes me feel, remembering the smells, the sound, temperature, time of day. I will not try to create a true copy or a representational piece, but rather an imprint of emotions. Often these come through and translate into something very personal in the mind of the viewer, creating a link to one’s own experiences and memories. “   - MARKETA KEMP

Marketa Kemp is a Melbourne based artist, working primarily in the medium of printmaking. Although not a representational painter, most of her work is based on real locations that left a deep impression on her. Marketa’s artistic aim is to capture the essence of place, how it ‘felt’ rather than how it ‘looked’ and leave the rest up to the viewer to interpret in whichever way is meaningful to them. It is always a very personal affair.

As an artist she doesn’t look for places of beauty in a traditional sense, but rather places rich in atmosphere, hidden life and mystery.

Her aim is to make the viewer feel something…

Marketa is represented by Queenscliff Gallery in Victoria and Mesh Art Gallery in Chicago. She has been a finalist in a number of art awards such as Megalo International Print Prize, Australian Monoprint Prize, Omnia Art Prize and Maldon Landscape Prize.
