Marmalade

Marmalade by Lily Mae

WHEN | 28 May to 29 June

WHERE | Long Gallery

OPENING/BOOK LAUNCH | FRIDAY 3 JUNE 6PM-8PM

'Marmalade' delves into the bittersweet journey of grief and the preservation of memory following the loss of her grandmother. As a pivotal figure in Lily's childhood, her grandmothers passing marked the end of an era, profoundly shaping her experience of adulthood. Through 'Marmalade', Lily navigates the complexities of longing for childhood comforts and her grandmother through an immersion into ancestral traditions and nature stemming from their Celtic culture. The project employs digital, film, archival material and language to articulate these themes. As well as an incorporation of a post humous collaboration with photographs her grandmother captured. A significant aspect to this work is the use of the ancient Celtic language 'Ogham', with handwritten passages woven throughout the exhibition, symbolizing the unique bond she shared with her grandmother. This exhibition supports the photobook that is also being developed for this body of work.

Lily Mae is a photographer and visual story teller based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Growing up, there was a strong importance of learning as many languages, cultures and broad knowledge of history. This knowledge was predominantly passed down to her from her grandmother; lovingly called Dan. These skills were further developed when she achieved her degree in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the University of Melbourne. She incorporates these themes and skills into her projects creating work that sits between the lines of photography and written work. She is currently completing her Master of Arts - Photography degree at Photography Studies College with the body of work 'Marmalade'.
