Delving into the mythic narratives of history and folklore, The Weft of the World weaves together aesthetic threads of the gothic, the medieval and the domestic, forming a tapestry of many journeys across the tides of the subconscious, voiced through the traditions of textile production and the handmade. Women have been speaking through needle and thread, warp and weft, for many thousands of years. Immersed in this long lineage of women’s storytelling, this exhibition, a collaboration between Claire Mercer and Eleanor James, contemplates the symbolic journey of the female wanderer and storyteller, investigating archetypal female roles, from queen to crone, harpy to seamstress.
