The Beauty of Living Sound emerges from a deeply personal interrogation of the roots of sound-making as an expressive, creative action in form. What is the nature of sound and how does one employ instrumental sound-making in pursuit of this question? How do two musicians incorporate these concerns in a musical dialogue?
Can they find a place and a mode of making?
Can they create a set of relations whereby a truly interactive and collaborative energy emerges from their efforts?
A sounding that is responsive and alive to the conditions, both inner and outer, of our time and place, now!
Can the moment of performance bring a revelation for those present that obliterates all but The Beauty of Living Sound in its unfolding?

Performers:
Simone de Haan is recognised as one of Australia’s foremost trombonists, creative musicians, and music educators. Simone has performed with the Seymour Group and Australia Contemporary Music Ensemble directed by Professor Keith Humble, and co-founded the leading contemporary music projects Flederman and Pipeline. Whilst resident in Europe in the mid-eighties, he performed with the Maarten Altena Octet, Future Shock and Ensemble Modern. Simone has commissioned over 150 solo and ensemble works for trombone, and held positions as Artistic Director for several major projects, including the inaugural Queensland Music Festival. He has also held leadership academic positions as Director and Professor at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, ANU School of Music, and UTAS Conservatorium. Simone recently returned to playing after a 15-year break, and is currently working on new creative projects, including collaborations with Raffaele Marcellino, Erkki Veltheim, Warren Burt, Phil Treloar, Clliff Crego, Cathie Travers, Anne Boyd, Miroslav Bukovsky, and this new duo with Ren Walters.

Ren Walters is a guitarist, performer, visual artist, tutor and current PhD student in improvisational performance practice at VCA and MCM, University of Melbourne. Ren has been active as a band leader, composer and performer in rock, jazz, improvised and free music, from Yellow Yachts, Millionaires and Wildlife, to Pyramid, TIP and THAT. He co-founded the Make It Up Club, Melbourne (ongoing improvisational music performance night) in 1998, was a member of the Australian Art Orchestra, and has travelled extensively nationally and internationally as a performing musician. Ren has taught and teaches improvisational music at VCA-MCM, Monash University, Melbourne Polytechnic, and Box Hill Institute. He currently performs with THIS Ensemble, organises CURRENT bi-annual experimental performance event (www.currentmusic-event.com), and hosts and convenes the General Assembly of Interested Parties (www.gaipsite.com), alongside an ongoing visual arts practice. Ren has produced an extensive catalogue of over 100 CDR titles.
