Angela Abbott, Don James and Adam Frith are three painters who paint and teach in the Montsalvat Painting School studio.
This show consists of land and seascapes, still life, flowers and portraiture all painted from life.
Don and Angela first met at the Victorian Artists’ Society in 1972 and they have painted together ever since. Angela studied oil painting with Shirley Bourne OAM after studying drawing at the NGV with Ian Armstrong.
In the early 1980’s, Don attended classes with Alan Martin at his Park Road Eltham studio and at Montsalvat. After Alan died in 1989, Don was invited by his widow Lesly to take classes and paint in his studio.
Angela, Don and John Wakefield got together to paint at the Park Road studio as well as travelling to paint landscapes in both Victoria and South Australia.
Adam Frith joined Don’s classes at the Park Road studio in 1991.
In 1992 David Moore invited Angela and Don to join him in the ‘Boat’ studio at Montsalvat and this association continued until the end of 2018.
Adam continued in Don’s classes at Montsalvat for a time, on occasion working as a substitute teacher. He continued working in Park Road studio.
After the fire which destroyed the Barn complex in 1996, the group moved to the Gatehouse Studio, then to Lesley Sinclair’s studio in the white cottage and after a time back in the refurbished Barn studio. Following the death of Matcham Skipper in 2011 they moved to their current studio above what was his residence.
When David moved to Castlemaine, Adam was invited to join Angela and Don to share this their current studio where they continue to paint and teach.
