Artist Statement - Eddie Moses
“I am an emerging artist who started painting in 2015 at the age of 70…. yes, pretty late. Prior I was a documentary filmmaker winning 17 awards in a 30-year career.
My first painting was a portrait of Albert Namitjira and his wife in the desert – that’s when I got really hooked on painting, it enabled me to tell stories about the world and my perception of it. And I didn’t need a big budget, a film crew, editing and post-production. Just some paint, brushes and canvas or paper – simple equipment, independent, free as a bird.
I am a long-time and still-performing musician/singer. As a painter, I find that art is like music – it can be sharp and defined or loose and liquid – I like the latter. When I paint I am not playing a single-note solo (as a trumpeter or a violinist might) - I am chording a melody using a collection of notes or strokes to create a total image of what I see. I am a figurative painter who likes to add abstraction to reality – the collective notes and strokes help me to do this. The figuration is what the eye sees, the abstraction what the mind sees. For me joining eye and mind assist the creation of story and emotion which is what I want my images to be.
My art is eclectic – it can be of people, landscapes, animals, still life, pretty much anything. I can work in plein air, with life models, photographs, with history. What I really want to capture is emotion…. I want to affect both myself and my viewers.
There are many great artists who I love – the ones who have affect me most are Caravaggio, Goya, Gauguin, Elmer Bischoff, Mark Rothko, Sidney Nolan, and…. well, the list is endless.
I paint because it helps me see the world in which I live, to make sense of it – it gives me joy and I hope this joy is transmitted to the viewer.”
