Let’s Talk About the Weather

 A visual essay.

Weather is a topic of daily conversation and observation. Drought lasts longer. Storms are stronger, bringing hail and fallen trees. Dry lightning starts fires in remote country. They burn for weeks. Rain comes too late. Floods follow. Then, for a short period, the weather is kinder. The bush begins to recover. Epicormic growth springs from trees. Grass trees blossom, providing a glut of nectar for recovering populations of birds, insects and other animals.

Cynthia Boyle has been painting and drawing since she can remember. She has a lifetime of images recording and interpreting places and events in her sketchbooks. “My sketchbooks were the first thing to go into the car in preparation for evacuation from bushfire danger.” The paintings and drawings in this exhibition spring from the observations in the sketchbooks. Each image tells a small story.

Together the paintings and drawings tell a story of the effects of climate over time, of the increasing severity of drought, storm, wind, smoke, fire, aftermath, rain, flood, habitat loss, regeneration, repair, hope and regrowth. With the advent of El Nino, the cycle begins again
