Beyond the human imprint - Michael Bowman
WHEN | 26 February to 30 March
WHERE | Barn Gallery
Beyond the Human Imprint reflects Michael’s deep connection to the natural environment, a passion that began in the early 1980s when he started bushwalking to access remote areas for trout fishing. Over time, the camera gradually replaced the fishing rod, and photography became a way for Michael to document the untouched landscapes he encountered.
In 1988, Michael transitioned from using negatives to slide film, choosing 35mm Fuji Velvia for its vivid colour contrasts. This format has been central to his work, even following his widely publicised rescue from Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park in July 2019. After becoming separated from his gear, Michael failed to return from a wilderness photography expedition and was rescued after 9 days.
With over 40 years of experience, Michael’s photography primarily documents the raw beauty of remote areas in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. His images, all devoid of human interference, highlight the vibrant colours and contrasts found in these pristine landscapes. His work represents the culmination of many arduous journeys through rugged terrain, dense bush, and deep watercourses. Bowman’s photography is driven by a deep respect for solitude and a patience to wait for the perfect moment— qualities that are evident in every shot.
Michael’s photography has been featured in Wild Magazine and showcased in several exhibitions across Melbourne.
Beyond the Human Imprint invites viewers to step into the untouched world that Michael has dedicated his life to documenting, offering a rare glimpse of the natural world in its purest and most timeless form.
